The New York Dolls leapt into the New York music scene in the early 70s, and no one had seen or heard anything quite like them. They were proto-punk, hard rock and glam all rolled into one outrageous package. Their 1973 eponymous debut, produced by Todd Rungrun, was immediately embraced by critics, with reactions like "brilliantly chaotic," "special genius," and "deviant thrill," to name but a few. The group became a cult favorite and doubtless influenced many rock and punk acts to come.
