Ode to a High Flying Bird

Combing through some year-end tribute lists, I discovered something about Charlie Watts I hadn't known before. Not only was he one of the greatest rock drummers of all time, but he was also a graphic artist before he hooked up with the Stones. In 1965 he published Ode to a High Flying Bird, a children's book celebrating the life of the "Bird" himself, Charlie Parker.

With simple drawings and hand-written text, it is a fascinating peek into an aspect of Watts that only deepens my affection for someone I've admired most of my life.
