Missouri-born, Texas-raised Will Johnson isn’t content to express himself in one medium. He’s been making music for the past few decades (with Centro-matic, Undertow Orchestra, Jason Isbell’s 400 Unit, Monsters of Folks, and others, as well as his solo work) and is also a novelist and prolific painter (with scores of exhibitions to his credit). Somehow, he found time to write his latest record, No Ordinary Crown, a collection of well-crafted alt-country songs (such a rarity these days) full of journeys, rich characters, and many moods. There’s some nice guitar, steel, and banjo work too.
