Berkeley high school buddies singer-keyboardist Gracie Coates and violinist Rachel Ruggles, settled in Brooklyn after college where they formed a chamber pop duo. Spending many years as roommates in a Bushwick loft, they have moved apart physically but remain close artistically, continuing to be “perfect musical mates” as NPR’s Bob Boilen once called them. On their second release on Ani DiFranco’s Righteous Babe Records, the EP Nowhere Now Here, their musical “symbiosis” as they call it is as strong as ever. For her part DiFranco is thrilled to have them on her label, declaring, “Their ethereal and provocative songs are a cinematic addition to the RBR cadre of feminist artist/activists.”
