The legendary “mother of Calypso,” Linda McCartha Monica Sandy-Lewis, a.k.a. Calypso Rose, is back with Forever. The 82-year-old singer has recorded over 20 albums, earned numerous accolades and awards, and has penned over 1,000 songs since she first began writing at age 13. Hailing from Trinidad, she was the first female calypso star and has never shied away from important topics like racism, sexism, and other social ills.

The first single, “Watina,” is no exception. The song is a paean to the long-suffering Garifuna, an Afro-Caribbean people who were subjugated and enslaved, and eventually displaced from their homeland. The Garifuna Collective is featured on the song, along with special guest Carlos Santana. Other guests include Manu Chao, the Jamaican dancehall star Mr. Vegas, electronica duo Synapson, and rapper Oli.
