INDISPENSABLE JAZZ

ENEMY pushes the very boundaries of the traditional piano trio. Known for its intensity and intricate polyrhythms, with each instrument acting as both counterpoint and anchor. The trio Kit (Downes on piano, Franz Petter Eldh on bass, and James Maddren on drums), released eponymously-titled debut in 2018. In his AllAboutJazz.com review, Roger Farbey praised the "undeniable and haunting melodic charm" of several tracks and added the album is "replete with canny polyrhythmic compositions, takes a few plays to register in the memory bank, but once it does, it emphatically stays there."

Kit Downes is a Royal Academy of Music alum. While there, he began working with the award-winning group Empircal, which was founded in 2007. He also performed with Lee Konitz and Django Bates, and Acoustic Ladyland. Downes released a slew of albums as a duo, trio, or member of Troyka. When ENEMY came together, he was already a veteran on the UK jazz scene.

Swedish-born Franz Petter Eldh started out playing guitar but switched to double bass at age twelve and started listening to jazz not long after. He moved to Copenhagen to pursue his Masters Degree in music at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory. He also played with Django Bates as well as Marius Neset, the Magnus Hjorth Trio, and others. He now makes Berlin his home.

James Maddren, like Downes, is also from the UK. He started early as well, at age 11. He played with a variety of groups and orchestras and studies with drummer/vibraphonist/composer Jim Hart. He's a highly sought-after session player for a variety of artists, including the Marc Copland/Stan Sulzman Quartet, Martin Speake Quartet, Julian Arguelles Tetra, and many others.

The group's latest release, Fiend, was recorded live in Basel Switzerland over their two-day residency at Bird's Eye.
