Cosmic Ear is a new Swedish free jazz supergroup which recently released its debut album, Traces. Led by clarinetist-multi-instrumentalist (Christer Bothén whose career spans six decades, Cosmic Ear examines the legacy of Don Cherry with whom Bothén collaborated on albums Organic Music Society and Eternal Now. Yet another multi-instrumentalist Mats Gustafsson worked with Cherry's daughter Neneh as well, and together and apart these musicians have been entrenched in Cherry's music throughout their careers.
Bothén plays both bass and contra bass clarinet, the donso n’goni (a West African string instrument), and piano. Gustafsson contributes tenor sax, flutes, ab clarinet, electronics, organ, and harmonica. Trumpeter Goran Kajfeš is also found playing pocket trumpet, synth, electronics, percussion, while Juan Romero's percussion instruments include congas and the berimbau. The quintet is rounded out by bassist Torbjörn Zetterberg. All members of the quintet have worked together before as part of Gustafsson’s Fire! Orchestra.
UK Vibe raved this exploration is, "an album that rewards repeated listening, each time revealing new layers and connections – a true gem in the realm of spiritual and avant-garde jazz. Immersive yourself completely and you’ll lose yourself in its timeless beauty."
Bandcamp's Dave Sumner notes that Traces, "digs deep into the soil of spiritual jazz, nurturing contemplative tones as precursors to rapturous eruptions."
