St. Vincent

All Born Screaming

Annie Clark is an American musician/singer who has styled herself as St. Vincent for the last decade. The former member of the Polyphonic Spree has worked with David Byrne, Glenn Branca, and Sufjan Stevens. The mezzo-soprano plays guitar, piano, organ, bass, and theremin. Her persona is distinctly dramatic. Her first self-produced album delivers on the music too, with the Guardian raving that All Born Screaming is “the unmasking of a great American songwriter” in its five-star review.

Brainstory

Sounds Good

This California trio’s second album treats the listener to a mellow vibe harkening back to classic 70s soul. It’s another band with brothers, Kevin and Tony Martin, with Eric Hagstrom rounding out the group. This sounds like perfect summer jams with smooth vocals and a laid-back sound. Yeah, it Sounds Good!

Justice

Hyperdrama

French electronica duo Justice is back with their new album, Hyperdrama. Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay certainly take their time when crafting a new offering. This is only the fourth release since their debut, Cross hit in 2007. Thumping bass, heavy synths, and infusions of Tame Impala (who makes an appearance on the featured track) are the order of the day.

Joyer

Night Songs

Brothers Shane and Nick Sullivan have released their fifth album as Joyer, a lo-fi affair of changing moods, mostly slow-core tempos (with some more upbeat pop tracks sprinkled in. With vocals firmly in the shoegaze territory throughout, the brothers are joined by Sabrina Nichols, an animator and singer in the brother’s native NYC.

Still Corners

Dream Talk

Tessa Murray and Greg Hughes are Still Corners, and the duo provides plenty of “Spell-binding vocals and guitar riffs” (Clash). The record takes the listener on a dreamy journey, which is appropriate for two people who met at a train stop. This is Still Corners’ sixth release, and it’s clear that chance meeting was a fruitful one.
